The Northeastern Railroads are:
Tony Moureilles — vocals and guitars
Rui Dias — guitars and background vocals
Jason Langshaw — bass
Ben Rich — drums
The Northeastern Railroads is the brainchild of Tony Moureilles, who started writing songs for this project in the fall of 2012. He is heavily influenced by shoegaze and dream pop bands like Slowdive, Ride, The Catherine Wheel, My Bloody Valentine, Cocteau Twins, and The Radio Dept, and another not-quite-shoegaze band called The National. Tony has been in a few bands before as lead singer, bassist, keyboardist, and/or guitarist, and the main songwriter in a couple of them. He also plays saxophone and clarinet, but has never played either in a band.
Tony chose a name other than his own for this project given that almost no musicians in this genre have the name of the individual behind them (DIIV, Wild Nothing, and Day Wave are good examples). He also wanted to provide anyone who heard the name of the project a first impression of what to expect, which he could not do with an individual's name. The Northeastern Railroads is his idea of an effort to evoke nostalgia and melancholy. Most of Tony's songs are reflections on life experiences or about people he has come across. The song "Senseless Cessation" is an exception, as the lyrics are a poem written years ago by his life partner.
Tony partnered with Ian Van Opijnen at the latter's studio, The Echo Room, to record The Northeastern Railroads' upcoming album, "Hope." The album is due out late winter 2016-2017.
